With Wimbledon finally out of the way, it was time for the real tennis to begin as the mighty Neston 5s took centre stage. Another glorious evening filled with sweat, ambition and enough Jungle Formula to keep the local insect population at bay. Thankfully this one was at home, meaning we didn’t have to venture away to the plains of Africa again.

The 5s got off to a flying start in the men’s. Howard and George wrapped things up so efficiently they even had time for a cheeky pint before the mixed started. Brian and Reece followed suit with another win – and, much to Brian’s delight, there wasn’t a double fault in sight.

League debutant Jo clearly hadn’t read the memo about easing herself in, teaming up with Nic to take the ladies’ doubles win by storm! Carol and Anna fancied a bit of revenge in theirs but had to settle for second best on the night.

Heading into the second round with a healthy 3-1 lead, Howard and Carol were handed the unenviable task of facing the opposition’s top pairing. They battled hard, chased everything down but eventually had to concede to a very strong pair.

Meanwhile, the Falck duo managed to secure a win, despite the odd marital negotiation over whose ball it was… it was OBVIOUSLY George’s, but the halfway pint clouded his judgement.

Nic maintained her unbeaten record alongside Reece and I’m certain she will be informing the chair that she remains available for selection whenever required. Brian and Jo also put in a superb shift but narrowly missed out in a championship tie-break that could have gone either way.

Overall, the mighty Neston 5s took a 32–16 victory over North Cheshire.
