Birkenhead1 vs Neston1
Match Report PART 1 by emma cummingsIn what can only be described as a true test of resilience (and possibly survival instincts), the 1st team 3rd and 4th pairs travelled to Woodchurch to compete on some of the most challenging courts ever encountered. “Difficult conditions” would be generous, between the unpredictable bounce and what appeared to be remnants of local wildlife scattered across the surface, it was less Wimbledon and more wilderness expedition.
The uneven bounce proved particularly unkind to our very own short man, Jack Coyle, who battled valiantly against both his opponents and the court itself.
We were delighted to welcome newcomers Olivia and Ollie to the team. Olivia, having recently relocated from Perth, Australia, was perhaps expecting a slightly different introduction to British club tennis, safe to say Woodchurch was a baptism of fire. Despite this, both she and Ollie showed fantastic spirit.
A special mention must go to Olivia and Ollie in the 4th mixed, who delivered an outstanding performance. They pushed their opponents all the way, narrowly losing a tight set 7–6, in what was arguably the highlight of the evening. Unfortunately, Ollie was forced to retire shortly after with a sore wrist- reportedly “paddle wrist” or something along those lines- bringing a premature end to their efforts.
All things considered, it was always going to be a tough match, and the conditions certainly didn’t help our cause. That said, the team showed great determination throughout.
An early night was unanimously agreed upon, and attention now turns to next week’s fixture at Thorndale where we remain hopeful that both the courts will be considerably more welcoming.
